The latest review of the Aldwark Arms has been written by Gordon Cartwright from Visionary Dining. Gordon trained under Michel Roux and was Chef at the renowned Sharrow Bay Hotel in the Lakes. He then became an AA inspector, eventually managing their team of inspectors, so he’s assessed all the best restaurants in the country. Here are a few of Gordon’s words from the beginning of his review:

“I like to think that my culinary career has been punctuated by enough WOW moments not to get too excited about anything these days Perhaps I have WOW fatigue. Perhaps I’ve just dined in too many wonderful places over the years to be bowled over. Either way, when WOW’s come along these days they’re big, they’re burly and they strangely remind me of those great Tango ads that entertained us so vividly in the 90’s. Anyway, cutting to the chase, I can confirm to you dear readers that the Hill brothers have joined (with honours)... my WOW hall of fame.”

"...I fully understand why the guest who accosted me during the evening wants to keep Aldwark a secret, but I'm sorry, this place needs to be shouted about. Chris, his family and staff must be praised for what they have achieved and deserve all the success they can get. Though I bet when I next ring to make a booking – which I certainly will – and am told they are full, I will wonder if I shouldn't have kept my mouth shut."

The food really was fantastic and it was great to have some real ales too. We will come back.

Chocolate dessert was excellent. Staff were very good.

This is our 5th visit and the food is unsurpassed! Everything else is also very good especially the Copper Dragon.

Very impressed. The tasteful modern décor, imaginative presentation of food (e.g. lemon meringue tart). The ladies toilet is amazing - better than many top class hotels. Top marks from all who ate your steaks.

Absolutely lovely and lovely atmosphere. Will try and come more often. Monday - Tuesday Special is good value for money during the week.

Starters excellent - soup and prawn cocktail.

The beef was tender and beautifully cooked. The broccoli was done to a turn and the carrot/swede delicious. Altogether a delicious meal. We were not offered horseradish, but not a problem. The sweets were delicious especially the ice cream. An unexpected treat. Thank you and very good value. We will certainly come back when we can.
